In the frames of Estonian-Swiss cooperation programme Switzerland is supporting the increase of the monitoring capacity in Estonia with a total contribution of CHF 8,5 million (approximately EUR 6,9 million).

High-quality environmental monitoring is essential to get a comprehensive picture on the status of the environment, its trends and effects. The timely made decisions based on the reliable information gained as result of monitoring, help to reduce human health risks caused by deteriorated environmental conditions as well as to avoid damages to the ecosystems.

Lisainfo:

he main priorities of the Programme “Enhancing public environmental monitoring capacities” are to raise the environmental monitoring laboratorial capacity in Estonia, to upgrade the early warning system as well as monitoring stations in order to guarantee their functioning on required quality level, and to develop service-based infrastructure of land information system to improve the location system accuracy. Programme implementation period is 2012-2015 and it consists of 11 projects. The implementers of projects are organisations that are responsible for state monitoring programme implementation. Before the Programme, the Estonian laboratorial capacity was weak compared to EU requirements and several chemical analyses were ordered from the laboratories of more advanced EU member states. Thanks to these eleven projects, Estonia will be able to improve its implementation of EU regulations on environmental monitoring, to gather by itself data that is as comprehensive and reliable as possible, and to increase the speed of data collection and transfer.
